“You expected to be sad in the fall. Part of you died each year when the leaves fell from the trees and their branches were bare against the wind and the cold, wintery light. But you knew there would always be the spring, as you knew the river would flow again after it was frozen. When the cold rains kept on and killed the spring, it was as though a young person died for no reason.”

“If you are lucky enough to have lived in Paris as a young man, then wherever you go for the rest of your life, it stays with you, for Paris is a moveable feast.”

On April 8, 2014, they started demolishing this building in the 13th arrondissement of Paris.

What was it? A temporary street art exhibition which involved:

  • 100 street artists,
  • over 400 artworks,
  • 6 months of creative process,
  • and an exhibition that lasted 1 month.

Here is a series of interviews subtitled in English, with Medhi Ben Cheikh, the curator of the project and some of the artists.

Follow the project here: http://www.tourparis13.fr/

In this talk, Dr. Alexandre Marchac shows how innovations in plastic and reconstructive surgery can make a difference in people’s life. Way to go Sacha! – I haven’t been that moved for ages.

The Falling Leaves

Autumn in Paris. Strolling down Boulevard Raspail, I saw the trees and the falling leaves and this song by Edith Piaf started to play in my head.

Edith Piaf: Autumn Leaves (Les Feuilles Mortes)

The falling leaves
Drift by the window
The autumn leaves
All red and gold
I see your lips
The summer kisses
The sunburned hands
I used to hold.
Since you went away
The days grow long…
And soon I’ll hear
Old winter songs
But I miss you most of all
My darling, when autumn leaves start to fall…
C’est un chanson
Qui nous ressemble
Toi qui m’aimais
Et je t’aimais
Nous vivions tous les deux ensemble
Tou qui m’aimais
Moi qui t’aimais
Mais la vie sépare
Ceux qui s’aiment
Tout doucement
Sans faire de bruit
Et la mer efface sur le sable
Les pas des amants désunis.
Since you went away
The days grow long…
And soon I’ll hear
Old winter songs
But I miss you most of all
My darling, when autumn leaves start to fall…

“Never make your home in a place. Make a home for yourself inside your own head. You’ll find what you need to furnish it – memory, friends you can trust, love of learning, and other such things. That way it will go with you wherever you journey.”

“Loneliness is the human condition…

“Loneliness is the human condition. Cultivate it. The way it tunnels into you allows your soul room to grow. Never expect to outgrow loneliness. Never hope to find people who will understand you, someone to fill that space. An intelligent, sensitive person is the exception, the very great exception. If you expect to find people who will understand you, you will grow murderous with disappointment. The best you’ll ever do is to understand yourself, know what it is that you want, and not let the cattle stand in your way.”
