“Everyone who is seriously involved in the pursuit of science becomes convinced that some spirit is manifest in the laws of the universe, one that is vastly superior to that of man.”

– Albert Einstein, Dear Professor Einstein: Albert Einstein’s Letters to and from Children.

  1. I wonder how Einstein would reconcile that claim with the existence of vehemently anti-religious physicists like Lawrence Krauss and Victor Stenger, and with the fact that less than 10 percent of the scientists in the National Academy of Sciences believe in a personal God.

  2. Love this quote. In response to William: Einstein was not as strident as other atheistic scientists, and did not try to disprove or ridicule religion in the same way. Einstein frequently said he was uninterested in such activities, given that our human knowledge is so limited — he said when we try to study the universe we are like children in a vast library — and therefore, one may have a “religious” feeling of reverence at the beauty and harmony of nature.

Great post and good question raised by William.
