Understanding the Human Brainwaves

One of the ways to understand hypnosis, meditation, energy work, or mediumship is by understanding our brainwaves.

Brainwaves are electrical impulses in the brain that can be measured in cycles per second or hertz using electroencephalography (EEG). Our thoughts, emotions, and behaviours are communicated between neurons within our brain. Those activities occur at various frequencies and can be categorised into five major bands: Gamma, Beta, Alpha, Theta and Delta.

Gamma brainwaves are the fastest and most subtle brain waves. They can be measured in a state of high focus, 'peak mental state', and also homeostasis.

Beta brainwaves dominate our normal waking state of consciousness when we are alert, attentive, engaged in conversation, making decisions and problem-solving.

Like the practices mentioned above, hypnosis oscillates between Alpha and Theta brainwaves.

Alpha brainwaves are slower and reflect our calmness, a relaxed state, mental coordination, and body and mind integration.

Theta brainwaves are much slower and happen during deep meditation and daydreaming.

In both Alpha and Theta states, we are in a state of expanded consciousness. We have access to the subconscious mind and the information in the quantum field.

But does it mean that we need to be relaxed to have a hypnosis session? No, we can be highly emotional and triggered.

Hypnosis sessions in the alpha state are pretty active. We are very aware of our surroundings and the information that comes to and through us. One of the misconceptions about hypnosis is assuming that being in a trance state is being asleep.

Finally, Delta brainwaves happen when asleep or in the deepest meditation. Healing and regeneration are stimulated in this state.

Some of us might have experienced low beta, alpha, theta and even produced Delta during yoga Nidra.
